A 27-year-old woman identified as Karolina Krzyzak died in Bali after adhering to an extreme fruit-only diet that left her severely malnourished. The case has raised concerns about the health risks associated with restrictive eating practices.

Krzyzak had checked into the Sumberkina Hill resort in 2024, requesting a villa equipped with a private pool. Resort staff immediately noticed her frail condition, describing her as underweight, with sunken eyes and visible collarbones.

Rapid Deterioration During Stay

During her stay, her health declined visibly. Resort employees recalled that her fingernails had turned yellow, her teeth showed signs of decay, and she often struggled to walk without assistance. On one occasion, a night staff member had to help her back to her room.

Despite repeated encouragement from staff to seek medical attention, Krzyzak consistently declined treatment.

Discovery in Resort Villa

Three days after her arrival, concern grew when a local acquaintance contacted the resort, reporting that she had not heard from Krzyzak since her check-in. Staff then entered her villa and found her unresponsive. She was declared deceased shortly afterward, with malnutrition confirmed as the cause of death.

A medical examination concluded that Krzyzak had been suffering from osteoporosis and a severe deficiency of albumin, a protein vital for maintaining healthy body function. Both conditions are consistent with prolonged starvation and poor nutrition.

Background of Restrictive Diet

Friends later reported that Krzyzak had a long history of body image struggles and had previously battled anorexia during her teenage years. While studying in the United Kingdom, she developed an interest in yoga and veganism, which eventually led her to adopt a fruitarian lifestyle. This restrictive dietary practice involves consuming almost exclusively raw fruits and vegetables.

Nutrition experts caution that while fruit provides vitamins and fiber, it lacks sufficient protein, fats, and essential minerals required for survival. They warn that fruitarian diets, if followed long-term, can result in organ damage, weakened bones, compromised immunity, and severe malnutrition.
