Access to Tanah Barak Beach in Kutuh Village, Badung, Bali, has been temporarily closed following a landslide that blocked the main road.

The incident, which occurred on Monday night, 6 January 2025, resulted in debris from a 130-meter-high limestone cliff covering a six-meter-wide stretch of road.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The limestone cliff, a popular backdrop for photos among visitors to the beach, collapsed due to heavy rainfall, according to Wayan Latra, manager of neighboring Pandawa Beach.

“The landslide happened around 1 a.m. during heavy rain. Thankfully, we close the road every night to ensure no visitors are passing through. This incident was clearly caused by the intense rain,” Latra said on Wednesday, 8 January 2025.

Ongoing Cleanup Efforts

Efforts to clear the debris are underway, with the management aiming to reopen access within three days.

“We predict the cleanup will be completed by Thursday, provided the weather cooperates and there is no additional rain,” Latra added.

Safety and Future Plans

In response to the incident, local authorities and management are conducting assessments to evaluate the cliff’s structural safety. They aim to obtain a certification ensuring the cliff’s stability for future visitors.

Kutuh Village is also planning upgrades to Tanah Barak Beach this year, including the construction of sidewalks, a cliffside bridge, additional selfie spots, and a garden to enhance the visitor experience.

A Beloved Destination

Known for its soft white sand, clear blue waters, and towering limestone cliffs, Tanah Barak Beach has long been a favorite destination for tourists. Large natural boulders scattered along the shoreline contribute to the beach’s charm, while the cliffside path leading to the beach offers breathtaking views.

However, for now, visitors will have to wait for cleanup efforts to conclude and safety evaluations to ensure the area’s readiness for reopening.
