A 43-year-old Canadian man was apprehended after allegedly stealing a silver pendant necklace from a jewelry store on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur, Denpasar, Bali.

Denpasar Police spokesperson AKP I Ketut Sukadi said the incident occurred on Thursday, 30 January 2025, at around 09.40 Wita.

According to Sukadi, the suspect was seen taking the necklace and putting it into his bag before engaging in a brief conversation with a store employee.

“The suspect told the employee, ‘Today is Chinese New Year,’ before walking out of the store,” Sukadi said on Friday, 31 January 2025.

The theft was only noticed after the suspect had left. A store employee immediately alerted colleagues and attempted to pursue him.

Caught After a Traffic Accident

As the suspect fled, he got into an accident, crashing his motorcycle into a car on a nearby road.

“The employee found the suspect had crashed into a car in front of Banjar Batu Jimbar,” Sukadi said.

The accident left the Canadian man with a wound on his temple. Bystanders quickly detained him before handing him over to the police.

Authorities have since charged the suspect under Article 364 of the Indonesian Criminal Code for minor theft, which carries a maximum penalty of three months in prison.
