A Canadian citizen, Denis Valles, is currently standing trial at the Denpasar District Court for alleged fraud related to a villa rental in Bali. The 44-year-old entrepreneur is accused of using falsified bank transfer receipts to claim payment for a year-long villa lease in Kerobokan, North Kuta.

“The defendant made a lease-lease agreement with a period of one year with a value of Rp 5.035 billion,” said Prosecutor Ryan Mahardika in the trial.

Villa Rental Agreement and Alleged Payment Discrepancy

The case stems from a transaction that began on April 20, 2025, when Valles expressed interest in renting Beelia Luxe Villa, located on Jalan Pengubengan, Gang Carik No. 8, Kerobokan Kelod. He met with the villa owner, Nurhanani, and agreed to a one-year lease with a two-term payment structure, totaling IDR 5 billion. The first and second installments were each set at IDR 2.5 billion.

Valles claimed to have made an initial payment on April 30, 2024, transferring CAD 209,420.00 to Nurhanani’s bank account. However, upon verification, Nurhanani reported that no such transfer had been received. A second transaction attempt was made on May 6, 2025, through Canada’s CIBC Bank, accompanied by another payment receipt for the same amount. According to the prosecution, both transfer claims were fictitious.

Legal Proceedings and Charges Filed

On July 31, 2025, the Public Prosecutor officially charged Valles with fraud under Article 378 of the Indonesian Criminal Code. The charges were presented during a hearing at the Denpasar District Court. The prosecution alleges that Valles continued residing at the villa from the initial agreement date until May 14, 2025, without making a legitimate payment

Police Investigation and Detention Timeline

Following a report filed by Nurhanani, the Badung Police initiated an investigation. Authorities conducted a series of inquiries that ultimately led to Valles being named a suspect. He was detained at the Badung Police Detention Center from May 15 to June 3, 2025. On June 3, his detention was transferred to the Class IIA Kerobokan Correctional Facility, where he remains in custody as the trial progresses

Current Status

The case remains under examination at the Denpasar District Court. Proceedings are ongoing, with prosecutors seeking to establish that Valles knowingly provided false evidence of payment to secure the villa rental.
