A Spanish national identified as Lopez Pino Perran (37) died while spear fishing in the waters of Pemuteran Village, Gerokgak District, Buleleng Regency, Bali, on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The incident was confirmed by Buleleng Police spokesperson, Iptu Yohana Rozalin Diaz.
According to police information, the victim joined a spear fishing activity with three companions: Putu Oka Wirawan (29), his younger brother Komang Desmen Wirawan, and their uncle, Ketut Diatmika (41). The group departed from Tanjung Bukit Ser Beach at around 12:00 WITA, heading toward the Tangkad Menaung waters in Pemuteran.
“It is suspected that the victim experienced blackout or lack of oxygen while doing spare fishing in the depths of the sea, because the equipment used was inadequate,” said Yohana, Monday (18/8 pm).
Warning Before Diving
Before entering the water, Oka advised the victim not to dive deeper than five meters. However, during the activity, the victim reportedly dove alone several times and did not follow the instructions given. At that time, Oka, Komang, and the victim were in the water, while Diatmika waited on the boat while fishing.
At approximately 13:00 WITA, or 30 minutes after they began diving, the victim was no longer visible. Oka and his companions attempted to locate him by circling the waters four times with their boat, but their search efforts were unsuccessful.
Search Efforts
Unable to find the victim, Oka dove down to five meters but still could not locate him. He then sought assistance from two other acquaintances, Gunarsa and Sudarmawa, who arrived with diving equipment.
The search was continued at the last location where the victim had been seen. At a depth of about 20 meters, the victim was discovered lifeless. Shortly after, personnel from the Buleleng Water and Air Police (Pol Airud) arrived to assist in bringing the victim back to shore.
“A foreigner from Spain died while spear fishing or archery fish in the sea waters of Tangkad Menaung, Pemuteran,” he said.
Cause of Death
According to police statements, the victim likely died due to blackout, a condition in which a diver loses consciousness at a certain depth as a result of oxygen deprivation.
The victim has been successfully evacuated to land. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation has been carried out, with witness statements and a detailed chronology forming the basis of the initial findings.
