President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Denpasar, Bali, on Saturday, 13 September 2025, brought attention to a story from residents of Jalan Gajah Mada IV. During the recent flooding in the area, a dog named Moka played a crucial role in alerting its owner, Ni Wayan Ayu Darmianti, to rising water levels that had entered her home.
“Wow, you are a hero to save your master,” Prabowo said as quoted from detikbali, Sunday (14/9).
Early Morning Flood Warning
According to Ayu, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, at approximately 04.00 Wita. Water from Tukad Badung overflowed and reached her residence, which is situated slightly higher than neighboring houses. Despite the elevated location, the floodwaters rose to an adult’s waist level inside her home.
Ayu recalled that she was asleep when Moka forced its way into her bedroom. Initially, she assumed the dog wanted to sleep alongside her and returned to rest. However, the situation escalated when Moka persistently scratched her legs and let out loud cries, prompting her to recognize the immediate danger.
“When I got off the mattress, water had already entered the room. The mattress is a bit high so it’s only felt once the feet go down. In the living room, the water is quite high,” said Ayu.
Evacuation Efforts with Two Dogs
Realizing the severity of the situation, Ayu moved her belongings from the floor to higher places in the house. She then evacuated to a small pavilion in her yard, accompanied by Moka. Another dog, Charlie, also contributed by barking loudly from the living room sofa as the water continued to rise.
The coordinated actions of both dogs enabled Ayu to take precautionary measures and leave the flooded area safely.
“Usually he sleeps outside, but that night he follows the doorbells. Maybe it’s instinct, especially since it’s raining so hard,” said Ayu.
Recognition from President Prabowo
The viral spread of the story on social media reached President Prabowo during his official trip. He personally acknowledged Moka’s actions, referring to the dog as a “hero” for successfully alerting its owner in time. The President’s remarks highlighted the significance of the animal’s role in the incident.
Flooding in Central Denpasar
Although Ayu’s home is located on a slightly elevated path, the flood still managed to inundate the area. The high water level demonstrated the force of the overflow from Tukad Badung and its impact on residential neighborhoods.
“Over time, the water got higher, until the chairs and tables were submerged. Because I was afraid of being trapped, I immediately went out to evacuate independently,” he said.
