A high tide caused by sea level rise, or rob, struck the Kuta Beach area in Badung, Bali, damaging sections of the pedestrian walkway. The incident occurred on Thursday, November 6, 2025, one day after the full moon, when waves reached the coastline and lifted parts of the paving along the beachfront path.
Immediate Response from PUPR Badung
The Head of the Water Resources Division (SDA) of the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), Anak Agung Rama Putra, confirmed the damage and stated that the department had immediately deployed heavy equipment to carry out temporary repairs at several affected points.
These actions were taken to prevent further disruption to the ongoing breakwater construction project managed by the Bali-Penida River Basin Agency (BWS Bali-Penida).
“We have lowered heavy equipment to carry out temporary fireplaces at a number affected points while waiting for the breakwater work from the Bali-Penida River Area Center (BWS) to be completed. After that, it will be reinstalled through maintenance activities,” he said
Temporary Repairs Cover 75 Meters
The repair work focused on cleaning and realigning damaged areas without interfering with the breakwater construction. The length of the pedestrian path that has been temporarily repaired is approximately 75 meters. The field team continues to monitor wave conditions to anticipate any further damage. Heavy equipment remains stationed at the location to ensure a rapid response in case of additional high tide events.
“In the last two years, there has never been any damage at that point. Maybe now the wave currents have changed, so we tidy up the arrangement first. Our fireplace is constantly moving, which is certain that our tools are on stanby to carry out pedestrian maintenance due to high waves,” he explained.
Equipment and Work Focus
To support the on-site work, the Badung PUPR Office deployed one bulldozer and one excavator. The machines were used to rearrange displaced paving blocks and remove sand materials carried by the waves onto the pedestrian area. These efforts aim to maintain the function and accessibility of the walkway while awaiting full restoration.
Long-Term Plan After Breakwater Project
Comprehensive maintenance of the pedestrian facility will be carried out after the breakwater construction is completed. The project itself is a key measure to mitigate coastal erosion and protect coastal infrastructure in the Kuta area.
Previously, Badung Regent Wayan Adi Arnawa emphasized that thorough improvements are needed both in terms of infrastructure and coastal management. One of the main priorities of the regional government is addressing coastal abrasion, which continues to threaten beach areas. Maintaining wave quality is also considered an important aspect of preservation efforts.
“Kuta waves are one pf the waves that are an attraction from surfers in the world and this must be maintained until later Kuta will remain a dream destination from international community,” he explained.
Ongoing Monitoring
Monitoring of sea conditions remains ongoing to prevent further impact on Kuta Beach’s pedestrian areas. With temporary repairs completed and heavy machinery on standby, the walkway is expected to remain safe and functional for visitors while awaiting comprehensive restoration once the breakwater project concludes.
