Crystal Bay Beach in Sakti Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, Bali, was flooded after heavy rain began on Monday at around 23:00 WITA. As a result, all beach-related activities have been temporarily suspended until cleanup operations are complete.
The flooding was triggered by overflowing water from the eastern hillside, which carried thick mud, fine sand, gravel, branches, and pieces of wood. These materials were swept into the tourist area, accumulating in the parking lot and entering several local kiosks. The debris also disrupted economic activity and blocked parts of the access route leading to the beach.
Mud and Debris Block Tourist Access
Visitor access to Crystal Bay Beach was hindered as mud and wooden debris covered the roads and parking area. Water levels in the parking lot reached approximately 20 centimeters, while several kiosks were flooded by 20-40 centimeters. Inside the affected kiosks, layers of mud between 5 and 10 centimeters thick accumulated, prompting owners to remove wet goods and clean the floors.
The access road to the beach was also rendered slick and hazardous by mud and scattered wood debris. Cleanup teams worked to ensure the route could be safely used again.
Cleanup and Recovery Efforts
Cleanup operations began on Tuesday at 07:00 WITA, involving personnel from the police, military, Sakti Village officials, and local residents. The effort relied on manual tools such as shovels, hoes, and buckets. A chainsaw was also used to cut larger pieces of wood lodged in the parking area and in front of kiosks.
“We continue to strive to carry out post-disaster handling gradually and sustainably. The synergy of the apparatus and community participation is very important so that the Crystal Bay area can recover immediately and support tourism activities again,” said Nusa Penida Police Chief AKP I Ketut Kesuma Jaya when contacted, Tuesday (9/12/2025).
Kesuma stated that accelerating the site’s post-disaster recovery is a shared priority. According to him, cleanup was carried out in stages to ensure all affected areas could be restored as quickly as possible. Local kiosk owners focused on clearing the interiors and reorganizing merchandise after removing mud deposits.
Current Conditions at the Site
By midday, around 75 percent of the parking area had become usable again. However, thin layers of mud remained in several areas of the site, necessitating ongoing cleaning. Some kiosks were still undergoing drying and rearrangement due to thick mud deposits inside.
“Material losses are still being collected. If the casualties or injuries are nil,” added Kesuma.
The access road to Crystal Bay Beach has also been cleared of mud and wooden debris. Although the route is now passable, tourist activities remain suspended temporarily to support the ongoing cleanup and ensure safety throughout the area.
