Bali Zoo will officially stop all elephant-riding activities beginning in early 2026, marking a significant policy shift in the management of one of its key attractions. The decision reflects the institution’s stated commitment to prioritizing animal welfare and responsible, sustainable conservation practices.

“Animal welfare is the top priority of Bali Zoo. This policy was taken to support better management of elephants and ensure that care standards continue to be improved,” said Head of Public Relations Bali Zoo, Emma Chandra, in her statement, Thursday (1/15/2026)

Alignment With National Conservation Policy

Emma explained that the policy is in line with Circular Letter Number 6 of 2025 issued by the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE). The circular calls for the termination of elephant riding demonstrations at conservation institutions across Indonesia.

The directive serves as a formal guideline for zoos and conservation centers to reassess activities involving elephants, particularly those related to public interaction. Bali Zoo’s decision to halt elephant riding aligns with this guidance and demonstrates its compliance with national conservation policy.

Emma also stated that Bali Zoo has coordinated with the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (Balai KSDA Bali) regarding the implementation of the circular letter. This coordination is intended to ensure that the transition away from elephant-riding activities is conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Focus on Elephant Welfare and Natural Behavior

According to Bali Zoo, the discontinuation of elephant riding is intended to give elephants more time and space to engage in natural behaviors. The policy is expected to support improved social interaction among elephants and more effective care programs.

“In the future, Bali Zoo will continue to focus on daily care of elephants, conservation education, and the development of visitor experiences that are oriented towards learning and caring for animals,” said Emma.

The zoo indicated that the absence of riding activities will allow for greater emphasis on daily care routines and enrichment programs that are intended to promote the physical and behavioral well-being of the elephants.

Shift in Visitor Experience and Educational Focus

Following the end of elephant-riding activities, Bali Zoo plans to redirect its efforts toward conservation education and learning-oriented visitor experiences. Emma noted that future programs will be designed to foster awareness and concern for wildlife, rather than direct physical interaction with animals.

The zoo’s management stated that its ongoing focus will include daily elephant care, conservation education initiatives, and the development of visitor experiences centered on learning and responsible engagement with wildlife.

While specific program details were not outlined, the zoo confirmed that the new approach is intended to align educational objectives with welfare centered conservation practices.
