The Bali Provincial Government and Bank Indonesia have officially launched QRIS Tap payment for public transport, Thursday (14 August 2025). With the system, passengers can simply tap their smartphones without scanning a QR code.

“This supports public transport in Bali through Trans Metro Dewata buses and we hope it will provide convenience for the community,” said Bank Indonesia Bali Head Erwin Soeriadimadja.

Bank Indonesia also expects the service to encourage more frequent use of public transport. The launch was marked by a symbolic transaction by Bali Governor Wayan Koster, Bank Indonesia Bali officials, BPD Bali, and members of the Bali Legislative Council (DPRD), witnessed by the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda).

According to Bali Transportation Agency Head I Gde Wayan Samsi Gunarta, all 75 Trans Metro Dewata (TMD) buses are now equipped with QRIS scan, e-money, and QRIS tap systems. The service is integrated with Trans Sarbagita, allowing passengers to pay once for onward travel on both modes.

“If you tap on TMD, you can continue on Trans Sarbagita for free, and vice versa. This means a single journey of up to 90 minutes now costs only IDR 4,400 per passenger,” he said.

The launch coincides with the 67th anniversary of the Bali Provincial Government, accompanied by a special fare of IDR 1,000 per passenger for QRIS Tap payments from 14–31 August 2025.

More Convenient Transaction for All Passengers

Passengers need a smartphone with near field communication (NFC) technology to use the payment method. NFC allows two electronic devices to connect at close range, enabling faster and more practical transactions for both Trans Sarbagita and TMD services.

TMD itself began operations on 7 September 2020 and ran until 31 December 2024, before being temporarily suspended due to unclear budgeting from the Ministry of Transportation. Services resumed on 20 April 2025.

Since its launch, payments for Trans Metro Dewata have been available via QRIS (QR Code Indonesia Standard) and e-money cards, which can be purchased from the bus driver and are available to both locals and foreigners.

With the addition of the new QRIS Tap option, transactions are expected to become faster and more convenient for passengers.

Currently, TMD operates six corridors in the Sarbagita area (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan):

  • Corridor 1: Sentral Parkir Kuta – Terminal Pesiapan Tabanan
  • Corridor 2: Terminal Ubung – Domestic Arrivals Bus Stop at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport
  • Corridor 3: Terminal Ubung – Icon Mall Bali Sanur
  • Corridor 4: Terminal Ubung – Sentral Parkir Monkey Forest Ubud
  • Corridor 5: Sentral Parkir Kuta – Bali State Polytechnic
  • Corridor 6: Sentral Parkir Kuta – Sentral Parkir Nusa Dua
