A 25-year-old Chinese tourist, Deqing Zhuoga, died after falling seriously ill at a budget guesthouse in Canggu, Bali. Before her death on September 2, she reportedly experienced severe vomiting, shaking, and fainting while staying in a room that cost approximately nine United States dollars or around one hundred fifty thousand rupiah per night.
Zhuoga was later found unconscious on her bed. She was described as half-dressed, wearing only an unbuttoned blue shirt. According to a Daily Mail report published on Friday, November 21, 2025, she was confirmed dead shortly after other guests and guesthouse staff reported the incident.
More Than Twenty Guests Hospitalized
The incident affected more than twenty other guests staying at the same property. Many reported similar symptoms, and at least ten were initially listed in critical condition when they were brought to local hospitals.
Among the victims was Zhuoga’s roommate, Leila Li, who required five days of intensive care. Li stated that she only learned of Zhuoga’s death after she was discharged from the hospital.
“She was too sick to move or call for help, lying in his bed vomiting for hours while other guests tried to seek help,” Li told the Daily Mail.
Other guests listed as victims in an official Kuta Police report included German tourists Melanie Irene and Alisa Kokonozi, Saudi national Alahmadi Yousef Mohammed, Filipino guest Cana Clifford Jay, and another Chinese tourist, Leslie Zhao.
Guest Reports of Possible Fumigation Activity
Li claimed her medical tests suggested a cause more serious than initially assumed. She also said that the room next to theirs had been closed off and quarantined the night before the incident, allegedly following a bedbug fumigation.
“The doctor who treated me has confirmed that it is pesticide poisoning and food poisoning,” she said.
Her statement was supported by accounts from other guests. Zhao, aged twenty-nine, arrived only a few hours after the hospitalizations began. She reported that she vomited and fainted for more than seven hours and said she received no response from staff when she called for help. Zhao stated that she believed she nearly died during the episode.
Official Cause of Death Undetermined
According to the medical report, Zhuoga’s official cause of death was acute gastroenteritis and hypovolemic shock. However, the origin of the suspected poisoning that affected the guests has not been determined. Some guests expressed concern that there may have been an attempt to withhold information about the incident, but no official confirmation has been issued regarding these claims.
Current Status of the Investigation
The case has been documented in an official report by Kuta Police. Authorities have not released further details on the ongoing investigation or potential next steps. Most affected guests have received medical treatment, while the underlying cause of the incident remains under review as officials work to clarify the source of the illnesses
