A foreign national is suspected of being a victim of an alleged money changer fraud in Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali, after discovering a significant discrepancy during a currency exchange transaction. The incident, which reportedly took place on Jalan Raya Nyuh Kuning, gained public attention after a video of the confrontation circulated widely on social media.
Incident Recorded and Shared Online
According to the viral video, two foreign women were seen confronting a staff member at a money changer outlet. The woman appeared visibly upset and demanded an explanation from the attendant. In the footage, they were heard telling the staff member to remain silent while insisting that their money be returned.
The video included a written narrative alleging that the money changer staff intentionally dropped one banknote belonging to the customer under the table during the transaction. As a result, the amount of Indonesian rupiah received did not match the value of the foreign currency exchanged.
Discrepancy Discovered After Recount
The alleged victim reportedly became aware of the issue only after recounting the rupiah received from the exchange. Upon recalculation, there was a shortfall of Rp950,000 compared to the expected amount based on the exchange rate applied during the transaction.
After realizing the discrepancy, the two foreign nationals confronted the staff member and requested that their foreign currency be returned in full. During the confrontation, they also threatened to report the incident to the police if the matter was not resolved.
Allegations Remain Unreported
Despite the public attention surrounding the video, local authorities stated that no formal complaint had been submitted regarding the alleged incident. Gianyar Police public relations officer Ipda I Gusti Ngurah Suardita confirmed that neither of the foreign tourists involved had filed an official report with the police.
As a result, law enforcement authorities have not been able to verify key details of the case, including the exact date and time of the alleged transaction. Without a formal report, police have not initiated an investigation into the matter.
Current Status
At present, the incident remains an unreported allegation, based solely on the video circulating online and the claims it contains. Police have not confirmed any wrongdoing by the money changer operator, and no further official action has been taken.
Authorities have indicated that further clarification would depend on whether the individuals involved choose to submit a formal complaint. Until then, the alleged case of fraud remains unverified, with no confirmed legal follow up or investigative process underway.
