The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar has issued an early warning of potentially dangerous sea conditions, forecasting waves up to six meters high in the southern waters of Bali from 8–11 July 2025.

On Monday, BBMKG Denpasar said the forecast is based on atmospheric conditions and wind patterns currently observed in the region. Wind speeds in Bali’s northern waters are expected to reach up to 30 knots, or around 55,5 kilometers per hour, moving from the southeast to south.

In southern waters, wind speeds are projected to reach 25 knots, or about 46 kilometers per hour, blowing from the east-southeast.

BBMKG has urged the public to be on alert for intensified wind activity across both northern and southern maritime zones around Bali.

Crossing routes affected

In the southern sections of the Bali Strait and Lombok Strait, waves are expected to reach up to four meters. In the Badung Strait and northern Lombok Strait, waves could peak at 2,5 meters.

These waters include key ferry routes—Bali Strait connects Bali and Java; Lombok Strait serves the Bali–Lombok crossing; and the Badung Strait links Denpasar with the tourist destination of Nusa Penida, part of Klungkung Regency. The Badung Strait also supports shipping routes between Bali and eastern Indonesia.

Southern Bali waters, meanwhile, are vital for local fishing fleets.

Safety warnings for vessels

BBMKG said these wind and wave conditions pose safety risks for maritime transport. The agency advised:

  • Small fishing boats to be cautious in wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights over 1,25 meters.
  • Barge operators to stay alert at wind speeds of 16 knots and wave heights of 1,5 meters.
  • Ferry operators to exercise caution in wind speeds reaching 21 knots and waves up to 2,5 meters.

BBMKG will continue monitoring conditions and urges the public, especially those involved in sea transport and fisheries, to follow the latest updates during the warning period.
