Traveling within Indonesia during the Eid al-Fitr holiday just got more affordable: The Indonesian government has officially announced a 13–14 percent discount on domestic economy-class flight tickets for the upcoming Lebaran period.
This reduction, which applies to flights between 24 March and 7 April 2025, could present an opportunity for Bali-based expats looking to explore other parts of the country.
Booking Period
The discount applies to all domestic economy-class flights and will be available for tickets purchased between 1 March and 7 April 2025.
The policy was announced at a press conference at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Saturday, attended by several key ministers, including State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir and Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi.
Purwagandhi emphasized the government’s commitment to making travel more accessible during the high-demand Eid season. “We want to ensure the public can enjoy more affordable and comfortable travel, especially during such an important holiday,” he said.
In addition to lowering ticket prices, the government has pledged to ensure sufficient flight capacity throughout the peak travel period, aiming to maintain both safety and service quality.
Tax Reduction Further Lowers Costs
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced a further incentive: a partial reduction in value-added tax (VAT) for domestic economy-class tickets.
Under the new regulation (PMK No. 18/2025), passengers will only pay 5 percent VAT, with the remaining 6 percent covered by the government. However, this tax relief applies only to tickets purchased from 1 March onwards—those who booked before this date will not receive the discount.
A Travel Opportunity for Bali Expats
For expats living in Bali, this discount could be an opportunity to travel beyond the island at a lower cost, whether for leisure or to experience the unique cultural celebrations of Eid in destinations like Lombok, Yogyakarta, or Sumatra. With airfare reductions and tax incentives in place, domestic travel during the peak holiday season might be more accessible than in previous years.
With tickets now on sale, those considering travel during this period may want to take advantage of the lower fares before demand drives up availability.
