I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has strengthened health monitoring measures by deploying thermal scanners in several key areas of the airport as an anticipatory step against the potential spread of the Nipah Virus. The initiative follows reports of rising transmission abroad and aims to enhance early detection among arriving passengers.
Coordination With Health Quarantine Authorities
The airport management is implementing enhanced surveillance in cooperation with Balai Besar Kekarantinaan Kesehatan (BBKK) Kelas I Denpasar. Through this collaboration, health supervision of passengers is being strengthened, with a focus on ensuring that screening procedures are consistently and thoroughly carried out.
“In connection with the increasing cases of Nipah Virus transmission abroad, we are intensively coordinating with the Denpasar Class I Health Quarantine Center in terms of supervision in the airport environment,” said Communication and Legal Division Head of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, on Wednesday night (28/1/2026)
Airport officials stated that all personnel are involved in strict, comprehensive monitoring, particularly in arrival zones where passenger traffic is highest. The supervision is intended to detect early signs of illness through body temperature monitoring.
Strategic Placement of Thermal Scanners
Currently, Ngurah Rai Airport has installed four thermal-scanning units at strategic points throughout the terminal. Two units are located in the international arrivals area, while one is in the domestic arrivals section. An additional thermal scanner is on standby at the VIP terminal to provide coverage across all arrival categories.
The placement of these devices is designed to ensure continuous monitoring and to support early identification of passengers who may require further health assessment.
Procedures for Suspected Symptoms
If a passenger is detected with early symptoms of Nipah Virus, the case will be handled immediately by BBKK officers. Passengers requiring further examination will be referred to Rumah Sakit Prof. dr. I.G.N.G Ngoerah in Denpasar in accordance with established health protocols.
Airport authorities emphasized that the handling of suspected cases will follow coordinated procedures between the airport and health quarantine officials.
Passenger Advisory and Current Status
In addition to the screening measures, the airport has advised passengers traveling to and from Bali to maintain their health and monitor the latest information on the Nipah Virus.
At present, all thermal scanners are operational, and health surveillance continues in coordination with BBKK Kelas I Denpasar. The airport confirmed that monitoring efforts will remain in place as part of ongoing preventive measures.
