Pemuteran Village in Buleleng Regency, Bali, has been recognized as one of the World’s Best Tourism Villages 2025 by the United Nations Tourism (UNWTO). The award was presented during the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism 2025 Ceremony held in Huzhou, China, on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The village was selected among 52 Best Tourism Villages from a total of 300 candidates representing 75 countries. The recognition highlights Pemuteran’s achievements in implementing sustainable tourism practices, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting community participation in tourism development.

“The preservation of coral reefs and the synergy of residents are the advantages of Pemuteran. Hopefully this award will have a positive impact on tourism and the local economy,” said Dody in his statement, Sunday (19/10/2025).

Collaboration Behind the Award

According to the Head of Buleleng Tourism Office, Gede Dody Sukma Oktiva Askara, the recognition resulted from strong collaboration between local communities, business owners, and the regional government. The award reflects the collective effort to promote sustainable tourism that balances environmental protection and economic growth. The Buleleng Government continues to guide and support other tourism villages in the region to achieve similar recognition on an international level.

“We want other villages to also be able to upgrade. The assessment and coaching process continues to be carried out so that they can compete internationally,” added Dody.

Known for Marine Conservation and Natural Beauty

Pemuteran is widely known for its marine biodiversity and coral reef conservation projects, which have become a key attraction for divers and eco-tourists. The village’s underwater beauty and commitment to environmental sustainability contributed significantly to its selection as one of the world’s leading tourism villages.

Following the award, Pemuteran officially became part of the Global Network of Best Tourism Villages, a UNWTO initiative that connects outstanding rural destinations worldwide. This inclusion enables the village to exchange knowledge, strengthen international tourism promotion, and advance development programs that prioritize conservation, cultural integrity, and local empowerment.

Strengthening Bali’s Tourism Image

The Head of Bali Provincial Tourism Office, I Wayan Sumarajaya, stated that the international recognition enhances Bali’s image as a sustainable and responsible tourism destination. He encouraged continued efforts to preserve the village’s achievements and maintain Bali’s reputation for quality and safe tourism. Ensuring security and comfort across tourism areas remains a key focus to support the island’s long-term appeal among global travelers.

“I invite all people, especially Pemuteran Village, to jointly participate in maintaining the sustainability of this tourism because Bali does not have natural resources,” said Sumarjaya.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

With its inclusion in the UNWTO global network, Pemuteran Village reaffirms its commitment to sustainable, community-based tourism that protects natural and cultural assets while improving local livelihoods. The Buleleng Regency Government plans to implement additional development programs to help other villages in the region adopt similar approaches.

Pemuteran’s international recognition positions Bali as a model for sustainable rural tourism, demonstrating how environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community collaboration can coexist to create lasting value for both residents and visitors.
