Villa Kitty Foundation, which began operating in March 2011 as a sanctuary for abandoned cats and kittens in Bali, now runs a purpose-built shelter in Banjar Tegal Bingin, Mas. The shelter is divided into multiple dedicated spaces to house, treat, and prepare cats for adoption. Areas include The Graduates and Anggun’s House, surrounded by Ketepang trees and gardens, as well as The Playground & Learning Centre, which also hosts monthly vegan Sunday lunches and celebrations such as the foundation’s anniversaries.
Facilities for Mothers, Kittens, and Quarantine Care
The Mothers Rooms consist of three spaces where nursing cats can raise their litters in a secure environment. The Nursery is designed for newborn kittens, cared for by specialist staff through bottle feeding and monitoring. Newly arrived kittens remain in the nursery for their first two weeks before moving to the Quarantine building, where they undergo their vaccination process.
Once vaccinations are complete, kittens are transferred to adoption-focused areas including the Kitten Kindy, Momo’s Room, and the Bale. These spaces accommodate sterilised kittens ready to be placed in permanent homes.
Hospital and Treatment Areas
The on-site hospital is divided into three sections: Kitten, Respiratory, and Annex. The Kitten section has separate rooms for isolation of Panleukopenia cases, symptomatic but test-negative kittens, and recovering patients. The Respiratory ward accommodates cats with flu-like illnesses, offering access to outdoor sunlight. The Annex houses cats and kittens with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) as well as older cats that require a quieter environment.
A temporary clinic and surgery have been established to handle medical procedures until funding is secured for a permanent facility. According to the foundation, this arrangement offers improved operating conditions compared to its former location. Veterinary teams assess and manage injured or ill animals in a clean and safe environment.
Rescue, Sterilisation, and Vaccination Programs
Villa Kitty’s operations include rescuing cats and kittens from streets, rubbish sites, hotels, villas, and other locations across Bali. In cases involving young kittens, the foundation ensures the mother is not nearby before proceeding with rescue. The organisation works in cooperation with Sunset Vet Bali.
The foundation runs free sterilisation and vaccination programs in collaboration with Bali Pet Crusaders and Drh Eko. Sterilisation is conducted three times a month for up to 20 cats per session, with free sterilisation for male kittens available by appointment on weekdays. Kittens in the foundation’s care are vaccinated from six weeks of age, with follow-up doses administered every three to four weeks. Vaccination services are also offered free to foster families and local residents unable to pay.
Adoption and Fostering Initiatives
Adoption remains a primary objective for the foundation. Cats and kittens are prepared for placement in safe homes, with the recommendation that adopters take two kittens if no other cats are present in the household to support social development. Foster families play a key role in safeguarding unvaccinated kittens by keeping them out of the shelter during the vaccination period, reducing health risks. The foundation acknowledges foster carers as vital contributors to animal welfare.
Continued Development Plans
Villa Kitty Foundation continues to work toward its goal of building a permanent clinic and consultation rooms. In the meantime, the organisation maintains its rescue, medical care, adoption, and outreach programs from its current facility in Mas.
