An American tourist identified as Annette Watson, aged 58, sustained an injury after falling while descending the stairs leading to Atuh Beach in Desa Pejukutan, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, on Tuesday (October 28, 2025). Authorities reported that the tourist is suspected to have suffered a fracture in her left arm following the incident.

“He fell approximately five meters from the position where he fell. Then, the victim felt pain or pain in his left arm,” explained the Coordinator of the Nusa Penida SAR Standby Unit, Cakra Negara,Tuesday (28/10/2025).

According to information received from Kadek Parwati of Klinik Nusa Medika, as relayed by Cakra, the accident occurred at approximately 2:10 PM local time. Despite sustaining an apparent arm injury, Watson reportedly chose to continue descending toward the beach rather than halting her movement midway.

Evacuation Efforts Involving Multiple Agencies

Upon reaching the beach, Watson was unable to stand or walk, prompting immediate assistance from nearby visitors and local authorities. Rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including the Unit Siaga SAR Nusa Penida, Klinik Nusa Medika, Pos TNI AL Nusa Penida, Polsek Nusa Penida, Babinsa Pejukutan, and the tourist’s companions.

Rescue personnel began coordinating an evacuation to bring Watson back up to the main parking area, which is located at the top of the cliff. The process proved to be challenging due to the steep and narrow terrain leading from the beach to the upper area.

By 6:05 PM, Watson was successfully transported to the parking area through a land route, with rescuers using a stretcher to carry her up the difficult path.

“The condition of the path that is wide enough can make it easier to lift with a stretcher. It can be done by six people. Next, Annette was taken to the Nusa Medika Clinic using an ambulance,” added Cakra.

Difficult Access at Popular Tourist Site

Atuh Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s well-known tourist destinations, famed for its scenic coastal cliffs and panoramic views. However, the descent to the beach involves a long and steep staircase, which has been known to pose challenges for visitors, particularly those with limited mobility or physical endurance.

In this incident, the challenging access route complicated evacuation efforts, requiring coordinated assistance from multiple agencies to ensure Watson’s safety.

Current Condition and Follow-Up

As of the latest report, Watson has been safely evacuated and is receiving further medical evaluation at a local clinic. Medical staff from Klinik Nusa Medika have noted a suspected fracture in her left arm, though confirmation will depend on further examination.

Authorities have not provided additional details regarding Watson’s current condition or whether she will be transferred to another medical facility for continued treatment.

The coordinated response between rescue teams and medical personnel ensured that the tourist received timely assistance despite the difficult terrain, concluding the operation without further complications.
