The Government of Bali and the Government of Bulgaria are discussing the possibility of forming sister city partnerships between cities under their respective administrations. The plan was presented by Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Pavlov during a meeting with Bali Governor Wayan Koster.

Deputy Minister Pavlov stated that Bulgaria would send delegations from several of its cities to Bali to explore cooperation opportunities with local governments. He noted that the initiative reflects the long-standing friendship between the two nations, which will celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations next year.

“The plan is for a delegation of around 25 mayors from various cities in Bulgaria to visit in December, to explore opportunities for sister city cooperation between local governments in Bulgaria and Bali,” he said.

Strengthening Cultural Ties

Pavlov emphasized that the talks were not merely formal discussions but a gesture of respect for Bali’s strong cultural identity and its global image as part of Indonesia’s heritage. He also expressed appreciation for Indonesian workers, particularly from Bali, who are known for their strong work ethic and positive character.

“We want to establish closer relations with Bali, in the fields of trade, tourism, education, agriculture, and technology exchange,” said Pavlov.

One of Bulgaria’s main interests is cultural collaboration, including artist exchanges and performances at art festivals in both regions. Governor Koster welcomed the proposal and invited Bulgaria to participate in the annual Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali), a major event that highlights Balinese culture and creativity.

“We are ready to open a space for communication and cooperation that brings real benefits to the community, both in the fields of culture, education, and the creative economy,” said Koster.

“Through art, we build a bridge of hearts and feelings between nations,” he said.

Expanding Cooperation in Education

The Bali Provincial Government also proposed cooperation in education, including student exchange and inter-university partnerships. Governor Koster noted that such programs could expand young people’s knowledge and strengthen international understanding through education.

Next Steps

To conclude the meeting, Governor Koster presented Deputy Minister Pavlov with a piece of Balinese endek fabric, symbolizing the island’s craftsmanship and support for local industries.

Both sides agreed to continue discussions during the upcoming visit of the Bulgarian delegation, which is expected to finalize the sister city cooperation plans.
