Apparently, Tourists Still Love Bali Despite Fodor’s “Destination to Avoid” Ranking, Recent Award Shows

Bali has been recognized as the second-best travel destination in the world, just behind London, England, according to Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2025. This accolade sharply contrasts the island’s inclusion in Fodor’s recent “No List” of destinations to avoid.

“Living Postcard”

Described by Tripadvisor as a “living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like fantasy,” Bali continues to captivate travelers worldwide.

Recommendations from the platform highlight diving along coral ridges, exploring lush jungles filled with ancient stone temples and playful monkeys, and immersing oneself in Ubud’s cultural offerings. The island’s capital of culture invites visitors to experience dance performances, batik and silversmithing workshops, and yoga retreats.

Known for its pristine beaches and sacred temples, Bali welcomed 6,3 million international tourists last year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. For 2025, the island aims to attract 6,5 million foreign visitors.

Best Rated Reviews Globally

The Travelers’ Choice Awards are based on reviews and ratings submitted globally on Tripadvisor between 1 October 2023 and 30 September 2024. These awards celebrate destinations that have won the hearts of tourists worldwide.

Bali’s recognition comes alongside five other Southeast Asian destinations in Tripadvisor’s top 25 list: Hanoi and Hoi An in Vietnam, Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, and Siem Reap in Cambodia.

Fodor’s “Destination to Avoid”

Despite its global acclaim, Bali’s inclusion on Fodor’s 2025 “No List” raises questions.

The travel guide cited concerns over overtourism, environmental degradation, and local challenges as reasons for recommending travelers to consider alternatives.

Still, Bali’s popularity remains undiminished, as evidenced by its continued appeal among Tripadvisor’s global audience.

This dual narrative highlights the complexities of managing tourism’s impact while maintaining the allure that draws millions to the Island of the Gods each year.
