A 35-year-old Dutch woman, identified only as MA, has been deported from Bali after she was caught impersonating a hotel guest to obtain free breakfast, Indonesian immigration authorities said.

Gede Dudy Duwita, head of the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center, announced the deportation on Wednesday, citing MA’s violation of Article 75, Paragraph 1 of Indonesia’s Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011.

“Foreign nationals who engage in dangerous activities or fail to respect the law may face administrative immigration measures, including deportation,” said Mr. Dudy.

MA had been residing in Bali since March 2022 on a tourist visa and was renting a villa in Nusa Dua for 300,000 rupiah (approximately $19) per day. The incident leading to her deportation occurred on September 13, when MA entered a luxury hotel in Nusa Dua, posing as a guest to access its breakfast buffet.

After enjoying the meal, MA was stopped by hotel security, who discovered she was not a registered guest. The hotel manager gave her the option to pay for the meal or face legal consequences. Unable to settle the bill due to insufficient funds—she reportedly had only 300,000 rupiah on hand—she was handed over to the police.

MA had been financially supported by monthly disability benefits of €1,400 (about $1,500) from the Dutch government during her time in Bali.

On October 8, MA was escorted back to the Netherlands under tight security, the immigration office confirmed.

“We are committed to maintaining public safety and ensuring that deportation procedures are carried out in compliance with regulations,” Mr. Dudy said. He also urged all foreign nationals residing in Indonesia to adhere to local laws to avoid legal complications.
