A 50-year-old foreign national from New Zealand, identified by the initials AJM, was detained in Ubud, Gianyar, after causing a disturbance at a restaurant. According to immigration authorities, AJM was reported to have consumed drinks at the establishment but refused to pay. He later returned to the restaurant after initially leaving the premises and created further disruption in the area, which is one of Bali’s popular tourist destinations.

“From the restaurant’s statement, AJM previously entered the restaurant, ordered drinks, but did not pay. He was expelled, but came back again and made a commotion to create a noisy atmosphere in the place,” said Haryo.

Immigration Patrol and Police Coordination

The arrest followed information received by immigration officers from the Ubud Police Sector. Immigration personnel were on patrol in the area when they were informed about the incident. Officers subsequently detained AJM, who was described as being intoxicated at the time. He was taken to the Immigration Detention Room in Denpasar for further processing.

“The team then detained the foreigner,” said the Head of the Class I Immigration Office of the Denpasar Special Immigration Checkpoint (TPI) R. Haryo Sakti in Denpasar, Bali, Tuesday.

Restaurant Management’s Statement

The restaurant’s management confirmed that AJM had ordered food and beverages but did not settle the bill. This report, combined with his disruptive behavior, led to the intervention of immigration officers. Due to his condition at the time of detention, authorities decided to postpone questioning until he was sober.

Immigration Status and Legal Basis

Data verification by the Denpasar Immigration Office revealed that AJM holds a Limited Stay Permit (KITAS) as a foreign worker. He is registered as a director with a permit valid from July 28, 2025, to July 28, 2026. While the name of the company he represents was not disclosed, officials confirmed his employment status under this permit.

Head of the Denpasar Immigration Office, Haryo, stated that AJM’s actions were deemed to have disrupted public order. Based on this, he was considered to have violated Article 75 paragraph (1) of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration.

Transfer to Immigration Detention Facility

After being held temporarily at the Immigration Detention Room in Denpasar, AJM was transferred to the Immigration Detention House (Rudenim) located in Jimbaran, Badung. Officials confirmed that the transfer was part of standard procedures in handling foreign nationals who violate regulations.

Deportation Process Underway

Immigration authorities announced that AJM is currently awaiting administrative procedures before deportation. Once the process is completed, he will be returned to New Zealand. No timeline has been provided for the completion of the deportation process.

“The plan is that the person concerned will be deported soon,” he said.
