A 25-year-old Russian tourist was found dead under unclear circumstances at a guest house in North Kuta, Bali, on Tuesday, 29 April 2025.

Police said the man was discovered lying on the floor of his room with a plastic covering around his head and a leather belt around his neck. Authorities are investigating whether these items indicate self-harm or other possible causes of death.

Guest House Worker Raised Alarm

A staff member at the guest house, Ahmad Sofyan, contacted police after noticing the guest had not emerged from his room for two days. According to Ahmad, the guest’s sandals remained outside the door, and repeated attempts to make contact went unanswered.

Concerned, local residents eventually helped to open the locked room, where they found the man unresponsive.

Police Investigating Circumstances

North Kuta Police responded to the scene at 17.45 WITA. Officers noted signs of physical trauma, including bruising and bleeding from the mouth and nose, according to a statement from Badung Police spokesperson Ipda Putu Sukarma. Police estimated that the man had been dead for over 12 hours before being discovered.

Several personal items were collected from the room to assist in the investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether foul play or other factors were involved.

“We are still investigating whether this was a criminal case or if other issues such as mental health may have played a role,” Sukarma said.

Post-Mortem Examination Underway

A post-mortem examination is being conducted at Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar to determine the cause of death. Police are continuing to gather witness statements and review evidence from the scene.
