A 31-year-old South Korean was found dead on Mount Agung, Bali, after being reported missing on 2 January 2025.

Rescuers discovered the body at an elevation of 2.200 meters above sea level (mdpl) on 3 January.

The joint search and rescue (SAR) team from Basarnas Karangasem had searched the area for two days to locate the missing hiker, who had embarked on a solo climb of Bali’s highest peak on 1 January without a local guide.

The hiker failed to return, prompting a search that began the following day.

Cause of Death

“We found the victim deceased, likely due to a fall into a ravine approximately 100 meters deep,” said I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnyana, the coordinator of Basarnas Karangasem.

The search operation entered its second day on Friday, with teams divided into three groups. Several hours into the climb, the hiker’s remains were located on a steep section of the mountain.

“The team is currently evacuating the victim’s body down the mountain. Further information will be provided once the evacuation is complete,” Wiadnyana stated.

Authorities Recommend Local Guide for Hikers

Mount Agung, standing at 3.031 meters, is a popular yet challenging destination for hikers.

Authorities recommend hiring local guides to navigate its rugged terrain, especially during the rainy season when conditions can become treacherous.
