The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) Region III in Denpasar has issued a high-wave alert for Bali, advising residents to prepare for potential wave heights up to 2.5 meters from Nov. 26–28, 2024.
The forecasted wave heights are expected to affect the southern part of Bali Strait, Badung Strait, Lombok Strait, and the southern Indian Ocean near Bali.
BBMKG has advised fishermen and marine tourism operators to remain vigilant as wind speeds could increase, posing risks on the water.
The agency further indicated that winds will predominantly blow from the northeast to southeast, reaching speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.
These conditions are linked to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a weather phenomenon in the Indian Ocean that promotes rainfall by aiding cloud formation across Indonesia.
Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Extreme Weather Risks
Alongside high waves, Bali is expected to experience light to heavy rainfall across its western, central, and eastern regions, particularly from midday to late afternoon.
BBMKG’s forecast highlights the risk of extreme weather impacts, including flash flooding, landslides, waterlogging, and falling trees.
BBMKG has outlined specific safety precautions for marine activities:
- Fishing boats should avoid areas where winds exceed 15 knots and waves surpass 1.25 meters.
- Barge operators are advised to exercise caution in winds above 16 knots and waves over 1.5 meters.
- Ferry operators should prepare for wind speeds above 21 knots and waves reaching 2.5 meters or higher.
With sea surface temperatures around Bali currently between 29–31°C and increased moisture levels from the surface up to 5,500 meters, BBMKG urges the public to remain vigilant and monitor further updates as these weather patterns develop.
